Reader suggests new dog laws
To the editor:
I am very thankful to live in a town such as Mt. Pleasant — peaceful, quiet and safe. I read the MP News daily especially the police reports.
Some of the reports are hitting home, such as “animal complaints.” I understand that the town officials refuse to pass a law requiring residents to keep their dogs on a leash and not to allow them to roam neighborhoods.
In my neighborhood, on King, there is a large blackish dog that roams the streets tearing up the bags of garbage left for pick up, and relieving itself on my lawn and my neighbors. I have sprayed this dog several times with my water hose and chased it off my property. The owners do not clean up after their dog and don’t care that it roams free doing the damage it does to their neighbors lawns and property.
Town officials need to pass a law requiring dog owners to not allow their dogs to run unleashed. I suggest two possible laws.
1. These dogs should be impounded at a cost to the owner of $100.00 to retrieve it.
2. Allow the homeowner on which the dog is found to deal with the dog how they see fit with no criminal or civil charges filed.
