Reuben B. Widmer
Reuben B. Widmer, M.D., 97, died Jan. 9, 2014, at La Via in La Posada.
Funeral services were held at Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Presbyterian Church.
He was born June 29, 1916, to Christian G. Widmer and Elizabeth Rediger Widmer in rural Wayland. He was a graduate of Wayland High school and Iowa Wesleyan College, Goshen College in Goshen, Ind., and University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Public Health Service. He married Annabel Raber on Aug. 1, 1939.
Reuben was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley., He was affiliated with the American Medical Association, Iowa State Medical Society, Henry County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians (charter fellow), Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, Iowa Heart Association, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Johnson County Medical Society, Society of Prospective Medicine, North American Primary Care Research Group and American Medical Society on Alcoholism.
He interned at the U.S. Marine Hospital, Norfolk, Va., and served with the U.S. Public Health Service, the medical arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his discharge from the military, he worked in Florida with Tuberculosis Control in the public health service. In 1948 the Widmer family moved to Winfield, where he set up his general private practice. From 1978 to 1980, he served as a medical consultant for the Oakdale Rehabilitation Center. In 1972, he moved to the Iowa City area where he became an assistant professor in the Department of Family Practice
He is survived by his children, Charlotte (John) Widmer Lilliedahl, Catherine (Richard) Widmer Wilterdink, Frederick (Paulette) Widmer, Philip (Debra) Widmer; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter Rebecca;, his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
