Richard E. “Coach” Palm
Richard E. “Coach” Palm, 93, of Springfield, died on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at Concordia Village Care Center.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Concordia Village on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016, at 11 a.m. Rev. Chris Nilges will officiate. The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m., until time of services at 11 a.m., at Concordia Village. A graveside service with military honors will be in the Swedesburg Cemetery, in Swedesburg, on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Concordia Village Scholarship Fund, 4101 W. Iles, Springfield, Ill. 62712 Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West.
Palm was born on March 30, 1923, in Henry County, the son of Elven N. and Nellie M. (Neff) Palm. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1941. He went on to serve in the Unites States Navy during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre with the Amphibs. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Gunners Mate Third Class. He returned to Iowa, graduating from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1950, and later earned a master’s degree from Iowa State University.
Palm began his teaching career as a history teacher and was a baseball, basketball and football coach for several high schools in Iowa. He moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1960 to continue teaching history and coached primarily football for several years.
Palm is survived by his brother, Blaine (Margaret) Palm, of Springfield.
