MEDIAPOLIS — A handful of Henry County wrestlers advanced on at the Class 1A sectional in Mediapolis on Saturday afternoon.
New London pushed through five matmen to the regional tournament and WACO got two in.
The Tigers were led by two sectional champions, Sam Loyd at 113 lbs., and Javis Krieger at 132 lbs.
Loyd receieved a bye in the first round before beating Cody Calvelage of Louisa-Muscatine, 16-2 to advance to the championship.
Loyd, currently ranked No. 2 at 113 lbs., then faced a familiar foe, No. 5 Devon Meeker of Wapello, in the championship. Loyd won the top-five battle, 1-0, to take the bracket.
After a first round bye of his own, Krieger won an intense 10-9 decision over Cory Stewart of Highland in the semifinals. He then pinned Wilton’s Jerome Mays, in 5:46, to take first place.
The Tigers had three second-place finishers. Reno Chiri defeated A.J. Ponce of Wapello in the 145 lbs. second-place match to advance, and both Gavin Holmes (160 lbs.) and Jaxon Allen (195 lbs.) went through by rule.
Kade Mckinney picked up a win for WACO, at 220 lbs. After a first round bye, Mckinney defeated Mediapolis’ Logan Robben, 13-2, by major decision. He pinned Calib Lilly of Wilton, in 3:08, to take the bracket.
Cody Crawford kept his state hopes alive despite losing on a tiebreaker in the 285 lbs., first place match and having to wrestle for true second. He cruised past Max Wetzel of Louisa-Muscatine, 9-0, to move on.
The seven Henry County 1A wrestlers who advanced will continue on to Wilton on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 12 p.m., where they will battle for spots at the state meet in Des Moines.
