Square project to be completed by Nov. 1
Warner Engineering is working on a timetable that calls for the construction portion of the Central Park/square project to be completed by Nov. 1.
Beginning tomorrow (Oct. 15), traffic on the square will be switched to clockwise with travel on the new pavement and all vehicles parked on the inside of the square (closest parking spaces to Central Park).
The side of the street closest to the businesses will be blocked off to remove the existing street surfaces and pour patches back to blend the old existing surface into the new surface.
Today, the striping crew is laying out all the parking around the interior of the square. Mt. Pleasant Municipal Utilities (MPMU) is working on setting light poles around the fountain today and tomorrow. MPMU will be finishing hooking all conduits to the lights around the perimeter of the square by Friday.
Interior park sidewalks are also being poured with a completion date set of Oct. 16 or Oct. 17.
Weather permitting, the saw crew will saw all concrete around the square Oct. 15. Kinney & Sons will start removals by Oct. 16 and Mike Nelson Concrete will follow the removal crew, fine grading, installing rebar and pouring patches. The work blending the new pavement to the existing pavement is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 25, weather permitting.
Kinney & Sons will be working on the fine grading inside of the square Oct. 21 — following MPMU completing the underground portion of the new lighting improvements. Kinney & Sons hopes to have its work completed in time to seed the square by the end of October.
An official of Warner Engineering Associates, Inc., the engineer for the project, said the project has gone extremely well for the amount of work being done, noting the contractors, utility crews and city employees have worked very well together.
City Administrator Brent Schleisman said that when the traffic flow is switched to a clockwise direction, overnight parking will still be allowed on the south side of the park until the entire street is opened. Once the entire street is open, overnight parking around the park will be allowed as in the past.
