State makes postseason assignments for area winter sports teams
The Iowa High School Athletic Association has made some of its postseason assignments for winter sports.
Wrestling, bowling and Class 1A and 2A boys’ basketball teams have some information on their postseason schedules.
Wrestling sectional tournaments for Class 1A teams — including New London and WACO — will be Saturday, Feb. 8, at noon.
New London will host the seven-team Class 1A Sectional 6, which also includes the Warriors. The top two wrestlers from each weight class at New London and in the eight-team Class 1A Sectional 5 at Lisbon will advance to the district tournament at Wilton.
District tournaments will be on Saturday, Feb. 15, at noon.
Mt. Pleasant wrestlers do not compete in a sectional tournament; they begin postseason competition at the Class 3A District 1 tournament at Burlington. The Panthers will compete against wrestlers from Bettendorf, Burlington, Davenport West, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley.
Top two finishers from each weight class advance to the state tournament, which will be Feb. 19-22 in Des Moines.
For bowling, the Mt. Pleasant girls’ and boys’ teams have been assigned to the Class 1A state-qualifying meet in Muscatine.
The meet will be at Pla Mor Lanes at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The state meet will be Monday, Feb. 24, at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.
The winning team from each of the eight qualifying site earns a trip to state, along with the two teams that have the next-highest scores across the state. All ties qualify.
The top individual finisher from each qualifier also earns a state berth, along with the eight bowlers who have the next-highest totals statewide. All ties qualify.
In Class 1A boys’ basketball, the New London, WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union teams have all been assigned to District 8.
Also in District 8 are Danville, Harmony, Highland, Holy Trinity Catholic, Iowa Mennonite and Lone Tree.
Pairings will be released at a later date.
Assignments have not yet been made for Class 3A and 4A boys’ basketball or for girls’ basketball teams.
