State rests its case, defense begins calling witnesses in Techel murder trial
(AP) — A neighbor who lived near an Iowa couple is a likely suspect in the death of a pregnant woman, defense attorneys said Thursday in Henry County District Court after they began calling witnesses.
After the state rested its case against Seth Techel, defense attorneys focused their witness questions on a neighbor who lived near Techel and his wife, the Ottumwa Courier reported.
Techel is charged with first-degree murder and non-consensual termination of a human pregnancy in the May 2012 death of Lisa Techel and their unborn child. She was found shot in their Agency trailer in southeast Iowa.
Prosecutors say Techel killed his wife to be with another woman. The defense says the couple’s neighbor, a man who had complained to authorities about alleged harassment from Seth Techel, may be a suspect. Prosecutors say there is no evidence to support that argument.
