Tennis teams top Fairfield
Mt. Pleasant girls’ tennis improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Southeast Conference foe Fairfield at East Lake Park Thursday.
Fairfield’s Karley Williams won the No. 1 singles match, 9-8, but the rest of the competition went Mt. Pleasant’s way.
Elizabeth Shaw took down Harley Cook, 8-6 and Tasha Glover downed Meghan Shelangoski, 8-0.
Raeanna Crile defeated Sierra Simmons, also by a score of 8-0, and Ashton Whaley beat Bryanna Gridley by the same score. Emily Hatfield won, 8-1, against Dayna Price.
In doubles, Taylor Beatty and Glover defeated Williams and Cook, Shaw and Whaley downed Shelangoski and Simmons, and Crile and Hatfield beat Gridley and Price, all by a score of 8-2.
The Panther boys had a very similar outing on Thursday at Fairfield. The Panthers claimed an 8-1 win over the Trojans, winning all but the No. 1 singles match.
Matt Zihlman won No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-4) against Landen Greiner, and Blake Wickham defeated Fairfield’s Cody White (6-2, 6-1).
Tyler Pace topped Bryce Lunsford (6-1, 6-1), while Colton Schinstock defeated Chance Nicely (6-0, 6-0), and Austin Meyer came out on top of Michael Brush (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, Zach Schmitz and Pace beat Govi Punj and Greiner (7-6, forfeit), while Schinstock and Meyer defeated White and Lunsford (6-2, 6-1) and Zihlman and Wickham downed Nicely and Brush (6-4, 6-1).
The Panthers improve to 3-1 on the season with the conference win.
Next up for the Mt. Pleasant boys’ team is Monday’s road meet against Notre Dame. The Panther girls will play again at the Ft. Madison tournament on Saturday.
