The Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties holds meeting
The Board of Directors of The Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties met at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, with business including sharing results of information on local participation in Special Olympics and results of an Arc-sponsored dance at Fairfield Middle School.
Brian Simmons reported The Arc dance at Fairfield Middle School was a success, though attendance down due to spring break. Individuals assisting were Code Amason, Betty Coop, Perry Hendricks, Lynn Kane, Wendy McKune, Joyce Morrissey, Toni Scott and Cassandre Simmons.
The next dance is scheduled for May 10.
Students and adults from Fairfield participated in both the State Special Olympics Winter Games at Dubuque in January and Mid-Winter Tournament at Iowa City mid-March.
The board approved assistance with camperships for students at WACO, a donation to Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant in memory of former Special Olympian Frances Boese and a donation in memory of Frank Workman. A card was sent from The Arc in memory of Esther Urban’s mother.
Donations received since the last meeting were as follows: $250 – Fairfield Eagles raised during their Casino Night, $10 – Mary Fleig, $750 to be used to assist with camperships at Harmony and Van Buren School Districts – William M. & Donna J. Hoaglin Foundation, $100 – Katy Hutton, $1,200+ donated to The Arc from popcorn sales, and $250 – Walmart Foundation as a result of Arc volunteer hours by Scott Clements.
A cloth bag of “goodies” was put together by Mary Sue Hoaglin and Darlene Vorhies from The Arc for Jennifer Clements, who is recovering from recent major heart surgery; a small Easter basket was also prepared for her sister, Jessica.
New 40th anniversary sticky notes were distributed to board members by President Mary Coffin; a committee is working on an open house or some kind of special recognition of the milestone.
Jack and Pat Whitten reported for the nominating committee that one slot remains open, but is being worked on, and a full report will be available at the May Board meeting.
Mary Sue Hoaglin reported for the audit committee that records are in order and the final report sheets are to be completed.
A thank you was read from Camp Courageous for selling fruit cakes again. Coffin noted a call was received from Willard Hoskins regarding the possibility of a pedal pull on Kids Day (June 28) at the county fair for youngsters with special needs, hoping for pre-registration so that names could be put on a trophy for each pedal puller participating.
Janet Morris indicated the need for help to run the popcorn machine at times when there are activities at Fairfield Middle School.
The scholarship committee has received applications that will be reviewed during April; it was noted that scholarship winner Rachel Robinson is listed on the dean’s list.
