The Arc receives donations for camperships

The board of directors of The Arc of Jefferson and  Nearby Counties met recently at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield conducted by President Brian Simmons. Primary on the agenda was Special Olympics and Christmas activities.
Darlene Vorhies sent word that she would be applying for grants from Alliant Energy and the William M. and Donna J. Hoaglin Foundation (to be used in Van Buren County) within the next couple of months to help with camperships.  Donations have been received from David and Phyllis Freeman and from Sandra Gillaspie, both to help with camperships. A check will be sent to Camp Courageous for $1,500 plus an additional $4,628 which has been donated to The Arc for camperships. A swim pass was donated to a local individual to provide needed therapy.
Sympathy cards  have been sent to the families of Howard Johnson, Edna Perry, Raymond Knopp, and thank you cards to members of the Ron Perry Family.  Numerous small Christmas gifts for younger special education students are being donated by Vorhies. 
A Special Olympics Coaches training for basketball, aquatics and track and field was held in Fairfield on Nov. 20, with several local individuals participating. Several adults from Fairfield qualified for the State Bowling tournament held in Cedar Rapids on Nov. 23.  Several local students will participate in Snowshoeing during the Special Olympics Winter Games to be held in Dubuque in January.
The resignation of Joyce Morrissey was reported by Simmons, and the board members will actively seek someone to replace Morrissey as a director for the remainder of the official year ending June 30, 2014. 
Simmons announced dates for 2014 Arc-sponsored dances at the middle school will be Jan. 17, Feb. 7 and March 7 – from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Adults who can help should contact Simmons at 641-919-4004.
