There is no health without mental health
To the editor:
Governor Branstad needs to hear me. Governor Branstad needs to hear Iowans.
We have listened to what he has had to say about closing MHI here in Mt. Pleasant. Now he needs to listen to what we have to say back. It is vital to not only protect and promote the mental well-being of Iowans, but also address the needs of people with mental disorders.
• 61,500,000: The approximate number of Americans who experience a mental health disorder in a given year. That’s one in four adults.
Just because Governor Branstad says closing two of our institutions will save Iowa money, but that’s not entirely true.
• $100,000,000,000: The estimated economic cost of untreated mental illness in the U.S. This includes unemployment, unnecessary disability, substance abuse and more.
For there to be positive and successful mental well-bring in Iowa, we need mental health institutes to provide for us Iowans.
• 70 - 90%: The percentage of individuals with mental illness who saw improvement in their symptoms and quality of life after participating in some form of treatment.
Mental health is an integral part of health; indeed, there is no health without mental health. MHI continuing to serve Iowa will in turn not only save the state money and give jobs to people who deserve them, but also save lives. Iowa needs mental health Institutions. Iowans need mental health institutions.
