The Iowa Wesleyan College football team used a strong aerial attack in its homecoming game against Crown College, while the visitors ran the ball hard in the back-and-forth contest.

In the end, Crown would prove powerful enough to claim an overtime win, scoring its final touchdown on six straight rushing plays and winning by a score of 34-31.

The Tigers couldn’t stop the Storm’s Duran Zachery, who had three touchdowns in regulation and ran the ball all six plays in overtime, capping the drive with a 3-yard touchdown.

It was Crown’s Josh Edlund that scored the first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard run.

It was the only score in the first quarter, but IWC fought back with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead at halftime.

Ridge Hobbs caught a 41-yard pass from Zandro Diaz with 14:53 left in the second quarter, and Chase Tackett had a 25-yard touchdown reception with a minute to play in the half.

Brandon Baker’s kick was good after both scores.

Crown tied the score in the third quarter on a 4-yard run by Zachery, and the team’s continued to trade touchdowns from there.

The Tigers took a lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Adrian Smith, their only rushing touchdown on the day.

Edlund made another run into the end zone for Crown, but IWC responded with a 13-yard touchdown pass to LiMichael Peeples with 6:30 left to play.

Zachery got into the end zone one more time to tie the game with 1:25 left on the clock, and the Tigers couldn’t do anything to avoid overtime.

It was the Tigers who scored first in overtime, as Baker made a 30-yard field goal.

But it was Crown who ended the game on a touchdown for the win.

On the day, Diaz was 28-for-43 for 427 yards passing.

Crown had only 43 yards in the air. The Storm had 364 rushing yards, however, compared to IWC’s 34 net yards on the day.

Peeples led the Tigers with eight catches for 157 yards. Raul Becerril made seven catches for 92 yards, and Hobbs had five receptions for 86 yards. Tackett also made five catches and picked up 68 yards, while Chase Taylor had 24 receiving yards on three catches.

Trey Todd led the Tigers on the ground with 68 rushing yards. Smith had 10 net yards.

Jamarco Clark led the IWC defense with 19 tackles and Sam Balbach had 11 tackles. Clark, Balbach, Raul Lozano, Andrew Terrell, Lance Mountain and Jory Simms each had a tackle for loss.

Iowa Wesleyan is now 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in the UMAC.

Next up for the Tigers is Saturday’s game at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
