The IWU women started their season opener on a good note on Tuesday night but a rough second quarter led to a 71-60 loss to Coe College.
The two teams traded blows throughout the first quarter. Iowa Wesleyan held a one-point lead, 16-15, when the buzzer sounded, thanks in part to five points from Ahlia Tai.
In the second period, however, the Kohawks took the lead on a jumper with 8:13 remaining and ended up outscoring the Tigers, 26-13, to take a 41-29 lead at halftime.
Coe continued to stretch the lead in the third quarter, eventually taking a commanding 21-point lead at 55-34, with 2:38 remaining.
The Tigers were able to cut the lead back down to 58-40 at the end of the third, but the Kohawks still took a big lead into the final period.
IWU staged a minor comeback early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers started the period on a 6-0 run thanks to two-points apiece from LaStella Slack, Jaimie Hurd and Darby Massner.
Coe, however, had enough offensive firepower to hold on to their double-digit lead throughout the quarter, eventually pulling the game out by 11 points.
The Tigers had three players reach double-digits in the loss. Cairece Allen had a monster game with 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Slack had 16 points an seven rebounds, and Massner hit three long balls in route to a 15-point performance.
Tai finished the game with five points. Hurd had four, and Josie Zerrusen and Allie Massner each scored two.
The Tigers will head to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Alverno Tournament this weekend. They will face Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m., and Ripon College on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.
