Tigers claim big win over Storm
INDIANOLA — The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s basketball team picked up a big win on Tuesday night against Simpson College, defeating the Storm by a score of 69-65.
The Tigers trailed 34-27 at halftime against the Storm, which was ranked No. 16 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association preseason coaches’ poll.
It was IWC that took the first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Stephanie Russak just 20 seconds in.
But Simpson took the lead back on the next two shots and held it through halftime. IWC didn’t get back on top until Whitney Godden hit a shot from deep to make it 52-50 with 7:16 left to play, and the Tigers didn’t look back from there.
Simpson narrowed the lead to just one point at 60-59 but couldn’t overtake the Tigers, who led by as many as six points in the last few minutes of the game.
With three seconds left on the clock, Jana Meister hit both of her free throws to seal the game for the Tigers.
On the night, IWC had four scorers in double figures, led by Karla Vietinghoff with 17 points. Godden added 15, while Russak scored 14 and Meister chipped in 12 points.
The Tigers shot 41.2 percent on the night and 44.4 percent from 3-point range. They made 88.2 percent of their free throws.
Simpson was 38.1 percent from the field and just 19.0 percent from deep. They were 72.2 percent from the stripe.
Simpson’s Brooke Panzer had a game-high 18 points to pace the Storm.
Vietinghoff had eight rebounds to lead the Tigers and Meister had pulled down six. Russak dished six assists and Kara Carter blocked two shots.
Godden and Vietinghoff had three steals each.
Both IWC and Simpson are now 2-1 on the season.
Next up for the Tigers is a home game against Westminster College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
