Tigers fight hard, fall to No. 1 Holy Trinity
NEW LONDON — They didn’t get a win, but they did give Holy Trinity a good match.
The New London volleyball team was swept by Class 1A top-ranked Holy Trinity (33-3 overall) on Tuesday.
The No. 4 Tigers lost by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-11 — it’s the closest New London has come to defeating the powerful Crusaders, who have held the No. 1 spot since the preseason rankings.
New London’s Jorgi Krieger and Emily Parks had eight kills each against the Crusaders, and Morgan Christner added five. Sarah Holtkamp had 21 assists.
Sami Koontz had a team-high 13 digs and Parks contributed 10.
Ashley Davey was a perfect 12-for-12 serving with three of the Tiger’s eight aces. Holtkamp had two aces on 7-for-8 serving.
Josten Boyer had the team’s only block.
The Tigers are now 29-5 overall and 5-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division.
Three of their losses are against Holy Trinity; the other two came at the hands of 3A Mediapolis.
Next up for New London is a match at West Burlington tonight (Thursday).
The Tigers then play in the Mt. Pleasant Tournament, which starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
