Tigers go 3-1 on weekend
KALONA — The New London softball team went 3-1 at the two-day Mid-Prairie Tournament this weekend, upping its season record to 26-8 overall.
The Class 1A No. 10 Tigers won games against Durant-Bennett (3-0), English Valleys (18-1) and PCM Monroe (5-4).
Their only loss — a 1-0 decision — came against the host team, Mid-Prairie, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A.
The Tigers were 1-1 on Friday, defeating Durant-Bennett and falling to Mid-Prairie.
Against Durant-Bennett, the Tigers scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning, and that accounted for all of the offense in the game.
Five different Tigers had one hit each, including Emma Pry, who hit a double and knocked in two runs.
Morgan Christner got the win on the mound, giving up just two hits and striking out 11 in the complete-game effort.
In their only loss on the weekend, the Tigers held Class 3A No. 3 Golden Hawks scoreless through five innings and allowed them just one run in the game, which came in the bottom of the sixth.
Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t plate a run themselves in their last chance at the plate and fell to the host team.
The Tigers had just two hits, one each from Sami Koontz and Jorgi Krieger. Koontz also stole a base in the game.
Caitlin Chiri walked twice, while Christner and Pry took one walk each.
Christner went all six innings on the mound, giving up four hits and three walks for one earned run. She fanned six in the loss.
In Saturday’s games, the Tigers ran away with a big win over English Valleys and squeaked out another victory over PCM Monroe.
Against the Bears, the Tigers scored four runs in the second, five in the third and nine in the fourth while allowing just one run in the third.
Emily Parks went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Chiri was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Koontz, Christner, Victoria Noel and Pry had two hits each; Koontz, Christner and Ashley Davey each had a double.
Davey, Kristen Allen, Pry, Christner and Koontz each knocked in two runs, and Pry had two stolen bases.
Christner picked up another win, as she threw four hitless innings and walked none while fanning nine batters. The Bears’ only run was unearned.
Finally, against PCM Monroe, the Tigers played a close game but held on at the end for a win. Each team posted one run in the first inning, and the Tigers added two each in the third and fourth. PCM tried to make a comeback, plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Tigers managed to stop them short and seal the win.
Christner was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and four runs knocked in. Pry went 2-for-3, and other hits came from Koontz — who hit a double and scored three runs — as well as Chiri, Parks and Josten Boyer.
Christner got the win, giving up four hits and six walks for four earned runs and striking out five in seven innings pitched.
The Tigers remain 7-3 in the SEISC South.
They play again tonight when they finish the regular season against Harmony, starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. in New London.
