Tigers pick up big win against Beavers
The Tigers continue to roll to start the season, picking up another great win in a fast-paced shootout on Saturday against Buena Vista University. The Tigers defeated the Beavers 86-81 to move to 7-2 on the year.
Whitney Godden led the Tigers with 23 points. Godden was 8-of-14 from the floor, including hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Karla Vietinghoff was hot as well, knocking down 8-of-17 from the floor for 22 points. Vietinghoff hit 4-of-6 from deep and pulled down five rebounds in the win.
Kara Carter added 14 points and pulled down six rebounds for the purple and white. Carter shot 5-for-12 from the floor.
The Beavers held a narrow lead for much of the first half before the Tigers really took control with 7:29 left in the first half. The Tigers then built a lead as big as 15 points in the half. BVU cut into the lead slightly before the break, as the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Tigers up 49-39.
IWC came out hot in the second half, going on an 8-0 to start the period and extended the lead to 18 points. The Beavers wouldn't give in as they used a 20-3 run to make it a one point game with 11:19 remaining.
The Beavers took the lead for the first time in the second half with 2:29 left. The Tigers managed to tie things up on two big free throws from Carter with 1:38 on the clock. After taking the lead on a layup by Vietinghoff with 1:13 remaining, the Tigers were clutch on free throws to close the game and pick up the win.
The Tigers shot 38.9 percent as a team and hit 44.4 percent of their 3-point attempts to pick up the win. Free throws proved to be huge as well as the Tigers connected on 18-of-20 attempts from the line.
The Beavers shot well from the floor, too, hitting 39.2 percent of their field goal attempts. However, they couldn't match the Tigers' shooting from deep as BVU hit just 21.6 percent of their 3-point attempts.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 9 when they host Principia College.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Ruble Arena.
