Tigers serve up a victory
DONNELLSON — The New London volleyball team kept the Central Lee offense off-balance with powerful serving, topping the Hawks in three straight sets to claim a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division sweep in Donnellson on Monday.
The Tigers won by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18.
“Our strength was our serving,” New London Coach Maureen Heath said. “We had 10 aces on the night, which took them out of their offense when we needed it — they’ve got some good hitters.”
Seven of those 10 aces came from Sarah Holtkamp, who went 22-for-22 serving.
The New London offense, meanwhile, held its own in the match.
“We had 38 kills, and I thought we spread our offense out pretty well,” Heath said.
Emily Parks led the Tigers in that category with 13 kills. Morgan Christner added 10 and Kenadi Schulte had nine.
Holtkamp had 27 assists.
“We also had great defense, with 68 digs in the match,” Heath said. “We stress defense a lot.”
Sami Koontz came up with 18 digs on the night, while Parks had 15 and Holtkamp had 11. Ashley Davey and Frankie Johnson each had eight digs.
Mahala Jewett put up three blocks and Josten Boyer had two.
The Tigers are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the SEISC South.
They open at home on Thursday against Van Buren.
“We need to clean a few things up before Thursday,” Heath said. “We need to cut down on our errors — we had too many hitting errors and a few too many service errors.”
The freshmen play at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, followed by JV and varsity.
