Tigers take two from Blackburn
The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team went 2-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play over the weekend. The Tigers dropped two games to Spalding University on Friday, but then took two of three games from Blackburn College on Saturday and Sunday.
Both Friday contests were close, but the Tigers couldn’t quite get ahead of the Golden Eagles. They fell by scores of 2-1 and 7-5 in the doubleheader.
On Saturday, the Tigers dropped the first game against Blackburn by a score of 14-7. But they went on to finish the weekend strong, bouncing back for a 7-5 win in the second game and then dominating Sunday’s game for a 15-5 victory.
The Tigers are now 7-20 overall and move to 6-11 in the SLIAC.
IWC scored seven runs on 11 hits in their 7-5 win on Saturday, led by Kristofer Klabunde and Justin Katich, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs apiece. Klabunde had two doubles and Katich had a double as well.
Jeffrey Burdett picked up the win, pitching a complete game.
Burdett allowed 11 hits and five runs over nine innings on the mound. He struck out eight batters and walked three.
In Sunday’s win, Luis Eric Torres got the win, going all seven innings. Torres allowed five runs on 10 hits. He struck out one and walked five.
At the plate, the Tigers had 15 hits to take down the Beavers. Travis Kostello went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Chayancze Stirbis and Katich each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Sunday’s game. Stirbis also reached home three times, while Katich scored two runs.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, April 15, when they host Washington University (St. Louis). The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex in Mt. Pleasant.
