Tolson reminisces about past Bible study groups
Glenwood Tolson celebrated his 98th birthday on Saturday, April 19, at his home with his most recent Bible study group. Over the last 45 years, Tolson has been a part of several different men’s groups where Bible study, meditation, prayer and worship were the primary objective.
He recalls some groups were as small as three to some as large as 30. For a time, he participated in as many as three different groups a week. His presence was always welcome for his wisdom and thoughts.
He continues to do so once a month with his most recent group, which is considerably younger than him. Members of the group are Glenn Diener, Ron J. Wyse, Glenwood Tolson, Joe Yocum and Bill Bare.
Wyse and Tolson are from one of the original groups formed. Yocum joined a few years later along with his brother Dave, who is now deceased. Diener’s father, Eber (deceased), was among the original group as well. Bare joined this group in 2013. When asked who some of the others would have been a part of a group he is involved with over the years, Tolson said he could not remember them all, but did mention Wendell Dodds, Lloyd Bensmiller, Gene Carricker, Butch Snyder, Leo Brau, Dave Yocum, Bob Eppard, Dave Cory and Eber Diener.
He said, if given more time, he could name many more. Tolson has touched many lives during his 98 years with his kind heart and willingness to share the wisdom he gleaned from Bible reading and prayer.
An open house will be held for Tolson on Sunday, April 27, at the Historic Second Baptist Church from 2 to 4 p.m.. The church is located at the corner of West Saunders and North Van Buren Streets in Mt. Pleasant.
