Undefeated Panthers win Clarke tournament
OSCEOLA — After its season-opening tournament, the Mt. Pleasant volleyball team remains undefeated.
The Panthers went 5-0 and were declared the champions at the Clarke Invitational on Saturday.
The Panthers defeated the host team by scores of 21-11 and 21-12, and went on to top their other four opponents as well.
They defeated Lamoni in three games, winning the first, 21-18, then losing by the same score before taking the tiebreaker, 15-6.
East Union went down in two games, 21-6 and 21-8.
The Panthers then beat Martensdale-St. Mary’s in three sets — they lost the first, 26-24, but came back to win the last two, 26-24 and 15-11 — before beating Lamoni once more, 25-12 and 25-10.
“The girls did great and made the town proud, both on and off the court,” Cocah Jeff Schulz said.
Taryne Shull led the team with 26 kills on the day, followed by Kelsi Phipps (20), Lydia Smith (19) and Brianne Holtkamp (19).
Holtkamp served 12 aces. Ashley Loving had nine ace serves and Brianne Potts had eight.
Phipps put up 15 blocks (eight solo), and Shull had 12 (seven solo).
Loving had 61 assists. Hannah Becker added 25.
Potts led the team with 48 digs, followed by Holtkamp with 28, Abigail Feldman with 18 and Loving with 14.
Next up for the Panthers is their first conference match of the season, which is at Fairfield on Thursday.
Mt. Pleasant will play its home opener next Tuesday, Sept. 10, against Washington.
