Vera LaVerne Diener
Vera LaVerne Diener, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa passed away at her Guatemala residence on Monday, July 15th, 2013. She was 86.
Born November 10, 1926 to Daniel and Helen Saltzman in Shickley Nebraska, Vera was the fifth of six children. The family moved to Keota, Iowa, and then to Wellman, Iowa, where Vera graduated in 1944.
While working at the Keota Telephone office with her sister Mary, Vera met Eber Glenn Diener. Eber and Vera were later married June 15, 1955.
The couple settled in Henry County and had 5 children, all of them graduating from New London High School.
Vera also cleaned houses, and worked as a cook at Henry County Health Center, and also at the PEO home before retiring.
Her Husband Eber and she attended Pleasant View Mennonite Church of Mt. Pleasant for many years until moving to Guatemala in 2009.
Vera’s hobbies included crocheting, quilting, sewing, reading, puzzles, games and game shows.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eber, brothers Elmer, Wilfred, and Harold, sister Mary Lamoraeux, and 1 great grandchild.
Survivors include; brother Joseph Saltzman of Kalona, IA, Daughters Mary Farrier of Washington, IA, Rozella Diener of Rock Island, IL, and sons Duane (Kelly) of Guatemala, Glenn (Karen) and Dan (Lisa) of Mt. Pleasant, IA, ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
In honor of Vera’s final request, her body was donated to the medical/science department at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala.
A memorial service will be held to honor Vera on Saturday, August 10th, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church of Mt. Pleasant.
