Verena Buffington, 98, Columbus Junction, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the Spring Run United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randy Whitsel officiating. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Spring Run United Methodist Church.
She was born Sept. 21, 1914, in Morning Sun, to William Alexander Thompson and Emily McKinley Thompson.
On June 12, 1938. she married Gerald Buffington. He preceded her in death. They lived on the farm in rural Columbus Junction.
She was a gardener and a seamstress. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was organist at the church. She also enjoyed teaching Bible lessons to her children and the adults Sunday school. She also wrote poems, quilted and painted. She also loved to do crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
She was in the Women’s Group at Spring Run Church, served on the district and conference levels of United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her children, Maribeth (Richard) Nelson of Davenport, Phillip (Robyn) of Mt. Union, Phyllis (Larry) Close of Zimmerman, Minn., Tony (Cindy) of Winfield, and Chris (Marcia) on the family farm.; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three brothers and three sisters.
