Viola Beattie, 98, Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Private family burial will be at a later date in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.

She was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Primrose, Neb., and was the daughter of Glen and Annabelle Kinnier Smith. She married Ralph E. Beattie on June 29, 1936. He preceded her in death. She worked at the Henry County Courthouse in the Assessor’s Office. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and traveling and she was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by her son, Rand Beattie of New London; two grandchildren; and one brother, Glen Smith of Cedar Rapids.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Judy; and three brothers, Don Smith, Roger Smith and Richard Smith in infancy; and her sister, Elsie Kinney.
