Vitale receives all-state honors
Mt. Pleasant’s Bo Vitale has earned an all-state honorable mention for his efforts this boys’ soccer season.
Vitale scored 27 goals on the year, tied for the third-highest total across all classes in the state. He also had 12 assists, giving him a total of 66 points, the fifth-highest total in the state.
Vitale helped lead the Panthers to a co-conference championship, and to their first-ever appearance in the spring state tournament. The senior had the Panthers’ two goals against conference rival Fairfield in their first substate game, and he had their only goal against Solon, which was their last obstacle on the way to Des Moines.
“Bo deserves every bit of that honor,” Coach Neil Schmitz said.
“He’s a pheonomenal player and had a great season. I think he was at least a second-team player, but I’m very excited for him and proud of him.”
Schmitz would have liked to see another Panther on the list, too.
“I think (keeper) Michael Alderson was deserving of the honor as well,” he said. “Those two were our stars, but not the only ones — we wouldn’t have been (at state) without a total team effort.”
Vitale plans to attend college and play soccer next year, but has not yet decided where he is going. Two other seniors will also continue their soccer careers: Alderson has plans to attend and play at Coe College, and Liam Clancy will attend the University of Dubuque and plans to be part of the soccer team there.
