W-MU finishes fifth at Columbus
COLUMBUS JUNCTION — The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ cross-country team took home some hardware from Monday’s Columbus Invite, as both Johnathan Quinn and Gavin Benzce claimed a medal at the meet.
Quinn led the Wolves with a 12th-place finish in 18:22 and Benzce completed the course in 18:37 to finish 15th overall.
Benzce was followed by Levi Giese in 24th with a time of 19:30 and Kollin Lintz in 25th with a time of 19:31.
Kohlton Heinzel rounded out the varsity scoring with a 39th-place finish in 21:05. As a team, the Wolves finished fifth overall.
Also running varsity for the Wolves were Tristan Klopfenstein, 44th in 22:08, and Kyler Smith, 46th in 22:25.
“The entire team took on the crazy hills of Columbus,” W-MU Coach Shaylena Bell said. “I was extremely impressed with the full team effort. They performed at the top of their game and they accomplished personal milestones that will just continue into the rest of the season.”
On the girls’ side, Grace Edwards took 30th with a time of 19:56 and Steffanie Watson-Hewitt was 35th in 21:36.
The JV boys’ team for W-MU also took home a medal: Luke Beard finished third overall in the race with a time of 21:02.
He was followed by Levi Watson-Hewitt in seventh with a time of 22:02 and Kane Harris in 11th with a time of 23:47.
Christian Fenton placed 12th in 23:50 and Jeffrey Cooley was 22nd in 27:45. Ross Vantiger finished in 24th place with a time of 28:22.
The Wolves also had four middle school girls and two middle school boys run at the Columbus meet.
For the girls, Whitney Vantiger took third in a time of 10:01. Cecelia Hemsworth was fifth in 10:05 and Fionna Sparrow was fifth in 10:22. Isabella Mertens was right behind in sixth place with a time of 10:24.
Jackson Brown ran for the middle school boys, finishing in 9:55 to take 12th place. Nick Davis crossed the line in 9:59 for 15th place overall.
Next up for the Wolves is the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet, which they will host on their home course at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Winfield.
The meet is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
