W-MU girls’ basketball starts season with win
WINFIELD — The W-MU girls’ basketball team started strong and held on for a 50-39 win over Pekin on Friday.
The Wolves scored 17 points in the opening quarter. They added 13 points in the second quarter and held Pekin to just 13 points in the first half.
Three W-MU players scored in double figures, led by Shelby Therme with 13 points. Cassie Kingery had 12 points and Alicia Escher scored 10.
Kingery was three-for-three from behind the arc, and Therme was one-for-four. Emily Mathews contributed eight points to W-MU’s efforts.
Both Therme and Escher finished with a double-double, as Escher led the team in rebounding with 13 and Therme pulled down 10 boards.
Escher, Kingery and Layne Davis each dished three assists, and Davis led the team with five steals.
The Wolves host Columbus on Tuesday.
