W-MU golf bests Columbus
WINFIELD — Grace Edwards earned medalist honors on the girls’ side of Winfield-Mt. Union’s golf meet against Columbus on Monday, and for the boys, W-MU’s Jake Edwards shared the title with Columbus’ Chase Finke. Both of the W-MU golfers led their teams to a victory over the visiting Wildcats.
Grace Edwards shot a 48 on the day, which was warm but windy.
As a team, the Wolves scored 227, which was good enough to defeat Columbus (249).
Lauren Baker shot a 52 for the Wolves, and Shelby Therme scored a 57. Hanna Koontz’s score of 70 rounded out the team total.
Also golfing for W-MU was Meg Proffitt, who shot a 71, and Katie Benson, who scored a 77.
On the boys’ side, both Jake Edwards and Finke shot a 40 to lead their respective teams.
In the end, the W-MU team was able to edge Columbus, 171-176, for the win.
Klayton Booth shot a 43 for W-MU, while both Brody Heying and Kolt Rossiter completed the course in 44 strokes for the team score.
Thayne McElhinney scored a 50 and Sam Jennings shot a 57 for W-MU.
The boys are scheduled to play in the Durant Tournament this afternoon; it begins at 12:30 p.m.
They will then play in the Mid-Prairie Tournament, which begins at noon on Tuesday, April 30.
Next up for the girls’ is an 18-hole home meet against Burlington Notre Dame, which starts at 1 p.m. on Friday at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Winfield.
