W-MU narrowly misses secondBoys’ golf takes fifth at Mid-Prairie Tournament, boys and girls split with Mediapolis
WELLMAN — The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ golf team placed fifth of 10 teams at the Mid-Prairie Tournament on Tuesday, just one stroke behind the three teams tied for second place.
Mt. Vernon won the tournament.
Brody Heying led the Wolves with a score of 83, followed by Klayton Booth at 87 and Zach Davis at 93. Sam Jennings shot a 103, followed closely by Thayne McElhinney (104) and Kolt Rossiter (105).
On Monday, both the boys’ and girls’ teams played in a dual meet against Mediapolis.
The boys lost a very close meet, 179-180, but the girls’ team picked up a win, 210-222.
Heying led the Wolves against Mediapolis as well, with a score of 39 for medalist honors. Jake Edwards shot a 40 and Booth scored 49. Both Rossiter and Davis shot a 52, while McElhinney finished the course in 55 strokes.
On the girls’ side, Grace Edwards led the Wolves with a score of 48.
Shelby Therme shot a 49, and Lauren Baker scored 51. Hanna Koontz completed the course in 62 strokes to round out the team score.
Also golfing for W-MU were Katie Benson (63) and Nicole Escher (66).
The medalist on the girls’ side was Kensley Heater of Mediapolis, who scored 47.
The W-MU boys golf’ team is competing today (Thursday) in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference golf tournament at Sheaffer in Ft. Madison. The tournament started at 9:30 a.m.
The girls’ team will compete in the SEISC Tournament on Monday. The girls’ side of the tournament will also be in Ft. Madison at Sheaffer, starting at 9:30 a.m.
The girls then golf at Sheaffer again next Thursday in the Holy Trinity Quadrangular, and the boys start postseason golf on Friday, May 10, at their sectional meet.
