W-MU, New London track teams compete at Danville Invite
DANVILLE — The Winfield-Mt. Union track and field teams placed fourth overall, just edging the fifth-place New London teams on both the girls’ and boys’ side of the Danville Invitational on Thursday night.
The W-MU girls’ team placed first in six different events, and the W-MU boys’ had two top finishes in the meet.
Leading the boys’ team was Max Fricke in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.27 seconds, along with the distance medley relay team, which finished in 4:06.81. W-MU beat out New London in the distance medley for the win; the Tigers took second in the event with a time of 4:15.97.
The only silver medal for the W-MU boys came in the 4x800-meter relay, where they finished in 9:19.3.
On the girls’ side, W-MU had three individual winners, starting with Karlie Wade in the long jump at 14-5 1/4.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Cassie Kingery — the defending state champion in the event — finished in 16.21 seconds for the win. She was followed by New London’s Dani Holt, who took second with a time of 17.56 seconds.
W-MU also got an individual win from Anna Crawford in the 400-meter hurdles, as she finished in 1:13.59. Crawford’s closest competitor was teammate Wade, who finished in 1:17.21.
The Wolves also had three first-place relays: they won the shuttle hurdle in 1:10.88, more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher; they also won the 4x100 (54.59 seconds) and the 4x400 (4:44.25).
The New London girls took a close second in the 4x400 with a time of 4:45.68. The Tigers also placed second in the distance medley relay with a time of 5:08.40.
The New London boys got a second-place finish from Matayo Christianer in the high jump at 5-4, as well as a silver medal in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:11.00.
Next up for New London boys’ and girls’ track is the Lone Tree Invitational on Monday.
For the Wolves, the girls will compete in the Pen City Relays in Ft. Madison on Tuesday, along with the New London and Mt. Pleasant girls’ teams. The W-MU boys will be at the Indian Relays in Wapello on Tuesday.
