W-MU splits Red Storm games with Wapello
WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams hosted Wapello on the “Red Storm” night, a night that celebrated the school’s alumni.
The girls’ team defeated the Arrows, 49-25, to open the night, but the boys fell to the Indians in overtime, 65-61, during their Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division game.
In the girls’ game, W-MU (13-4 overall, 12-3 SEISC North) held Wapello to only three points total in the first two quarters to take a 19-point lead at halftime.
The Wolves tacked on another 27 points in the second half on their way to victory.
Cassie Kingery scored a game-high 13 points for the Wolves, the only player on either team to score in double figures.
Alicia Escher led the Wolves with seven rebounds. Paige Breon dished three assists and had three steals. Shelby Therme blocked four shots.
In the boys’ game, the Wolves (3-11 overall, 2-11 SEISC North) matched the Indians basket for basket through the first quarter but fell behind in the second quarter, going into halftime down 28-24.
They made up that ground again in the second half and even took a lead, but the Indians tied the score in the final minute to force overtime.
The extra minutes worked to the Indians’ favor, as Wapello outscored the Wolves, 10-6, in the overtime period to claim a win.
Max Fricke had a game-high 25 points in the loss and Jake Edwards chipped in 12 points.
Edwards also grabbed 15 rebounds to finish with a double-double, and he dished four assists.
Fricke had three steals and two blocks.
The Wolves will play again tonight (Tuesday) when they host Lone Tree, starting with the girls’ game at 6 p.m.
