W-MU splits with Pekin
WINFIELD — The Class 1A 11th-ranked Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team came from behind for a win over Pekin, 47-46, but the W-MU boys didn’t fare as well against the Panthers, falling by a score of 61-51.
In the girls’ game, the Wolves trailed 26-17 at halftime. They made up some ground in the third quarter and the outscored the Panthers 18-13 in the final eight minutes to win by the smallest possible margin.
Logan Hartsock paced W-MU with 11 points and Layne Davis scored 10. Shelby Therme added nine points.
Hartsock also had a team-high six rebounds, and three Wolves had five boards each: Davis, Sam Jamison and Therme.
In the boys’ game, the Wolves trailed 27-23 at halftime but couldn’t make a comeback in the conference contest.
Zach Davis had a team-high 12 points and three other Wolves scored 11 points each: Max Fricke, Jake Edwards and Garret Baker.
Edwards and Baker also had 11 rebounds apiece to lead the team in that category.
The boys’ team is now 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, and the girls are 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
They play again Friday when they host Columbus.
