WACO base salary increases $900

WAYLAND — WACO’s base salary will increase by $900 to $26,815 under terms of the 2013-14 master contract which was approved by the WACO School Board members Monday night. The WACO Education Association ratified the agreement earlier.
The parties agreed to a two-year contract on money items and a one-year pact on language.
In the other major monetary item, the board will pay $520.70 monthly toward medical insurance coverage for each employee who elects to purchase health/major medical insurance and pro-rata for part-time employees eligible for coverage under the plan. The board also will cover employee-only fees associated with the health care reform act, beginning in January 2014.
Most language changes are due to the 4 + 1 (four-day school week calendar), which begins next school term. If the district goes back to the traditional school calendar, language would revert back to the 2012-13 master contract.
Following are the major language changes.
School calendar — The school calendar shall include 164.5 days, including 140 teaching days, five in-service full days, three work days, 12 in-service half days, 13 “+1” days (Fridays) and four paid holidays.
If it becomes necessary to cancel school for inclement weather or other unforeseen emergency situations, the day missed will be made up on the next half day in-service day on the calendar. In this instance the students would in session for a full day. If it becomes necessary, additional days can be made up at the end of the school year.
Year of service — A year of service consists of employment in the school district for one semester or more in one school year.
Work day — The work day for staff will begin and end at the following times: teaching day — 7:40 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; in-service full days — 7:40 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; work days — 7:40 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; in-service days — 7:40 a.m.-11:50 a.m.; “+1” days (Fridays) — 7:40 a.m.-11:50 a.m.
Preparation time — Certified employees, in addition to their lunch period, have daily preparation time on “teaching days” during which they shall not be assigned to any other duties as follows: elementary school — 50-55 minutes per day per employee; secondary school — one period per day per employee.
When an employee must use preparation time to cover another class because no substitute was available for a half-day or full-day situation, the employee filling in shall be compensated for the loss of his/her preparation time at the rate of one-seventh of the substitute’s pay per class period.
