WACO player ineligible, football team forfeits game
WACO High School has reported that the football team played an ineligible student per IAC 36.15(2), the “Scholarship Rule.”
The individual played in both of the first two football games, Aug. 30 at Columbus and Sept. 6 against North Mahaska.
“We understand that this was incorrect and will be forfeiting the two contests,” Coach Chad Edeker wrote in a release.
Since WACO lost the game at Columbus, the score will remain (21-12). The score of the North Mahaska game (39-0) will be officially changed to a 1-0 loss for WACO. All stats from both games will still be recognized; only the win-loss records will change.
This ineligible player, along with two others, were identified by the Edeker at the start of practice on Aug. 12. However, as the weeks of preseason practice continued, he forgot about the status of this player, as he was not a varsity player. The athlete was then put on the field in the second half of each of the two reported games. The JV coaching staff was not aware of the status of this individual.
In the future, both Edeker as athletic director and Principal Jeff Nance will make sure that all coaching staffs identify ineligible individuals and make sure they do not participate in interscholastic competitions.
