WACO rolls Lone Tree
LONE TREE — After starting the season 0-2 with a loss to Columbus and a forfeit against North Mahaska, WACO got its first official win when it counted: in the opening week of district play.
The Warriors topped Lone Tree by a score of 45-14.
WACO scored first at the end of the first quarter, as Tucker Janecek ran two yards for a touchdown on his way to 140 rushing yards on the night, and he ran again for the two-point conversion.
Janecek had another 2-yard carry with 3:24 left in the second quarter, and Cey Saeugling returned a fumble 15 yards for another WACO score just 14 seconds later.
The Warriors weren’t done yet, sneaking into the end zone one more time before the half ended — Janecek made a 16-yard touchdown run and Dylan Carlson ran for the two-point conversion. WACO took a 30-0 lead into halftime.
The Warriors gave up a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, but scored two of their own in the final 10 minutes of the game. Braden Blake connected with Bryce Achen for a 6-yard touchdown pass with 9:27 left in the game, and the pair teamed up again for the two-point conversion. Saeugling then ran 20 yards for the Warriors’ final score five minutes later, and Isaac Black’s PAT attempt was good.
Achen finished with 70 rushing yards and 33 receiving yards on the night. Blake was 6-for-9 passing for 53 yards. Joe Mitchell had two catches for 33 yards in the air.
Janecek had a team-high 13 tackles.
WACO is now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the district. The Warriors play at Van Buren in Keosauqua on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
