Warriors blank North Mahaska
WAYLAND — The WACO defense was dominant and the offense was sharp as the Warriors took their football home opener by a score of 39-0* against North Mahaska on Friday.
“The first week, we had a lot of fumbles, and missed two snaps,” Coach Chad Edeker said. “Friday, we didn’t turn the ball over, our punt snaps were good and we recovered our only fumble.”
Meanwhile, North Mahaska gave up a safety on a punt snap that went out of the end zone.
Overall, the Warriors allowed only 36 yards of offense and came up with 240 yards themselves.
“The defense did a much better job tackling,” Edeker said. “Our defensive line did a really nice job on the line of scrimmage. When the opponent has -5 yards rushing, you know you’re doing a decent job there. ”
Isaac Black had eight tackles and Tucker Janecek had seven.
Offensively, Braden Blake was 2-for-3 passing for 28 yards, and picked up nine yards on seven carries.
“We only threw the ball three times, but we had more attempts (to pass); Braden (Blake) did a nice job scrambling,” Edeker said.
Cornell Hulme and Joe Mitchell each had a reception, for 15 and 13 yards, respectively.
Janecek had 91 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdown. Bryce Achen had 86 yards for two touchdowns. Achen also scored on a 80-yard kickoff return.
Dylan Carlson also ran for a touchdown.
Next up for WACO is a trip to Lone Tree. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
