Brian Pattyson reports for the Wayland Lions Club and their meeting on April 15, with 20 attendees.
President Marianne Pattyson led the Pledge of Allegiance and Roger Roth gave the Invocation.
The meeting recessed for a meal catered by Alice Hochstetler.
Following the meal, the meeting resumed. Brian Pattyson shared the secretary minutes of the previous meeting and Terry Kaufman gave the treasurer’s report. President Pattyson read a thank you note from District Governor Fred Stark congratulating the Wayland Lions Club on their meeting format and their support of the WACO Leo Club.
President Pattyson reminded members of the Easter egg hunt on April 19, and their confirmed roles for the activity.
Brian Pattyson shared information from the Lions 9SE District Convention held March 28 and 29 in Washington.
The welcoming of the WACO and Burlington Leo Clubs was communicated regarding the Leo Panel that featured the two clubs expressing their experiences serving in their communities. It was noted that each attending Leo highlighted their favorite activity, often with excitement, compassion and humor. He also spoke of the “Leo Day” hosted by the WACO Leo Club at WACO High School on April 4, hosting the Burlington and Danville Leos.
Brian and Marianne Pattyson were both recipients of the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation at the District Convention.
There were 10 officer awards presented on behalf of the 53 Lions clubs in the 9SE District of Iowa. Lion Roger Roth was presented with a 45-year Chevron from Lions International President Barry J. Palmer acknowledging his service to the Lions, Wayland and the surrounding communities. Roth recalled his fond memories of the Wayland Lions and how the Lions added to his life experiences and friendships.
Wayland Lion membership chairman Brian Pattyson conducted the swearing in ceremony for new member Dustin J. Hulme. Pattyson was also Hulme’s sponsor for membership.
The Wayland Lions Club elected their 2014-2015 slate of officers: president, Randy Fehr; first vice-president, Royce Roth; second vice-president, Tim Egli; third vice-president, Ron Marsh; co-secretary and treasurer, Terry Kaufman and Carol Shumaker; membership and publicity chair and Leo representative committee chair, Brian Pattyson.
Wayland Historical director, Larry Roth, introduced guest speakers Caroline Lehman (President of Henry County Historical Preservation Society) and Faye Heartsill and Rosie Kramer who had done a survey of Salem’s Historical Structures.
They informed the Wayland Lions and WACO Leos of the procedures to do a similar survey of Wayland and Jefferson Township. A grant will be submitted to the state of Iowa for this project.
Jefferson Township representative Steve Kaufman and Wayland City Clerk Bev Conrad, WACO Leo advisor Carole Martins and WACO Leo President Paige Holmes were present to discuss the project.
The WACO Leos have expressed desire to assist in the Survey of Wayland and Jefferson Township to determine what structures would qualify as National Historical Sites.
The guest speakers then answered questions from those in attendance.
