Hector Urbano, Class of 1974, visits host family
Hector Urbano of Bogota, Columbia and his son, Mario Urbano of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., visited in Hector’s 1974 family home of Don and Eldora Boshart this past week. Much time was spent visiting with the “family” and touring the area.
Hector was a foreign exchange student at WACO starting in August 1973 and graduated with the Class of 1974. His last visit to Iowa was in 1991.
When Hector came in 1973, he spoke very little English, but quickly adapted and was appreciative of his American family, including siblings, Gale (also a classmate), Mark and Jan.
While a student at WACO, Hector participated in football (as a kicker), was in chorus and was in the play that year. He remembers enjoying a trip to Chicago with the Dr. J. G. Widmer family for a week.
Hector stated that he had the choice of New York, another large city or coming to Iowa. Since he lived in a large city in Columbia, he chose to come to Iowa.
He was emphatic about the positive impact his year with the Boshart family and WACO Schools had on his life and for his family and as a professional.
Hector went on to study business administration after his year at WACO, studied finance, and received his master’s degree in business administration.
He states that his knowledge of the English language helped him obtain his position in commercial banking. He is currently a manager over 25 branches of a bank; often flying to other cities to visit clients and employees of those banks.
Hector’s son, Mario, has been working in Florida as a freelance graphic designer and part-time with an agency for about one year. He was to begin a new position when he returned to Florida.
Mario stated it meant a lot to him to be able to visit his father’s American family to get acquainted with them and to see the area where his father stayed.
Hector also has a daughter, Monica, living in Bogota.
It was a wonderful visit for Hector and Mario and for all the Boshart family and friends.
