The Wayland Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors hosted their annual business appreciation dinner on Thursday evening, Nov. 7.
Members of the WEDC board are: Russell Yoder (President), Barry Leichty (V-P), Robert Meyer (Exec. Secretary and Treasurer), Lori Messer, Tawnya Achen, Rex McGuire, Greg Rich, Tracy Roth, Tim Egli, Tim Meyer and John Mitchell. Kathy Yoder serves the board as recording secretary.
President Yoder welcomed all and introduced Police Chief Ron Roth and members of the city council; Wayland’s newest dentist, Amanda Gilles and husband Danny; and Jessie Anderson, ARNP of Wayland Clinic, and her husband John.
President Russell Yoder then gave an overview of the activities of the WEDC for the past year, noting the purchase of 60 acres for the new Industrial Park East. This area has been annexed to the city and a RISE grant will allow infrastructure to begin in the spring.
Yoder noted the addition to his family with the birth of Eli Donald. He spoke of the passing of John Swartzendruber. Swartzendruber had been a charter member of the economic development group and will be sorely missed. “John promoted Wayland more than anyone,” stated Yoder.
Robert Meyer spoke on behalf of the Mt. Pleasant Area Development Commission; recognized Jessie Anderson and her contribution to the community as nurse practitioner in the Wayland Clinic; and also recognized Amanda Gilles, new dentist in the Pusey Dental Offices.
President Yoder introduced Ed Raber of the Washington, Iowa Economic Development Group, keynote speaker for the evening. Raber spoke of making the most of the existing businesses and marketing uniqueness.
