Weekend 3-on-3 tournament a success
“The Mt. Pleasant Easter Weekend 3-on-3 tournament went very well,” said organizer Ronnie Ashton. “Lots of people enjoyed it and wanted to know when I would do it again.”
The tournament was in the Mt. Pleasant High School gym on Saturday, March 30.
On the boys’ side of the tournament, there were participants in each age group, which went from third grade up. In the third-grade boys’ age group, the winning team even had participants that were in first and second grade.
The girls’ side saw teams in the fifth, seventh and eighth grade age groups. There were also teams in both the men’s and women’s open division.
Overall, 45 teams were signed up to compete.
Ashton said before the tournament that if it was a success, he would try to make it an annual event.
“If it goes over well, it could be an annual thing,” Ashton said. “Some adults have already said that they’d play, but they were gone, and they want me to organize another one.
“I’ve played in a lot of 3-on-3 tournaments myself,” he added. “We (played) music the whole time — it’s just a fun thing to get kids and adults together.”
First-place winners in the tournament were as follows: on the boys’ side: third grade, MP and One All-Stars; fourth grade, MP Thunder; fifth grade, Final Four; sixth grade, Suns; seventh grade, Mean Machines; eighth grade, Foster’s Guys; ninth-10th grade, The Dream Three; 11th-12th grade, That One Team; and in the open men’s division, 4 Peas in Pod.
On the girls’ side, the champions were: fifth grade, Van Buren; seventh grade, Mt. Pleasant Panthers; eighth grade, Hawks Future; and in the open women’s division, The Abusement Park.
