Wendell F. Peterson
Wendell F. Peterson, 89, Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning after noon, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will follow in Swedesburg Cemetery with military rites provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. Memorials have been established to Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church and The Parkinson’s Foundation.
Born Sept. 12, 1923, in rural Swedesburg, he was the son of Lloyd Canby and Madie Christine Vollmer Peterson. He attended rural schools and was a 1941 graduate of Olds High School. Following high school, Wendell attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years, along with taking a correspondence course in architecture from the University of Chicago. He married Audrey Elaine Peterson on Aug. 3, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, as a member of the Radio Signal Corps, in the Philippines. At the time of his discharge, He held the rank of sergeant.
A lifelong Henry County resident and owner of Peterson Implement all of his life until the business closed in 1992, he enjoyed building things.
He was a member of Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. He participated in Old Threshers Reunions. He enjoyed photography and traveling.
Along with his wife, he is survived by one son, Dan Peterson of Mt. Pleasant; three daughters, Cindy (Dale) Tarrence of Mt. Pleasant, Margie (Matthew) Peek of Wichita, Kan., and Nancy (Jeff) Wood of Ft. Worth, Texas; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
