WINFIELD — Randy Welcher’s golf game got off to a really good start on Sunday.

The Winfield resident aced the par-3, 165-yard first hole at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club.

“I was playing with 10 other guys, and when I hit it, someone said, ‘There’s a good-looking shot,’” Welcher said.

But everyone — especially Welcher — was surprised to see how good the shot really was.

“It hit just short of the green, rolled right up to where the pin was, and we all clearly saw it go in — everyone was cheering,” Welcher said.

But seeing wasn’t quite believing for the golfer.

“I really couldn’t believe it,” Welcher said. “I was asking, ‘Did it really go in?’ It’s such a rare thing.”

Welcher used a 5-hybrid on the shot — which was his third hole-in-one in two decades of golfing, but his first at Twin Lakes. He also had one at Pleasant Valley in Iowa City and one at Indian Hills in Morning Sun.
