Winfield-Mt. Union splits with Mediapolis
WINFIELD — The Class 1A No. 11 Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team was no match for Class 3A’s second-ranked squad, Mediapolis, as the Bullettes cruised to a 56-25 conference win over the Wolves on Tuesday night.
W-MU is now 12-2 and 10-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, both of its losses coming against Mediapolis.
The W-MU boys’ team improved its record to 7-6 and 6-5 in the conference with a 57-47 win over Mepo, holding off the Bulldogs’ late charge for the victory.
In the boys’ game, W-MU went up 14-6 after the first quarter and held a 30-19 lead at halftime. They stretched the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors, 17-8.
Mediapolis made a late run at the Wolves, going on a 20-10 run over the fourth quarter, but ultimately came up short.
Garret Baker led W-MU with 18 points and Jake Edwards scored 16 for the Wolves.
In the girls’ game, Mediapolis outscored W-MU 22-5 in the first quarter and limited the Wolves to just three second-quarter points on their way to a 37-8 halftime lead.
The Wolves kept up with the Bullettes in the second half but couldn’t make up any ground.
Layne Davis scored six to pace W-MU in the game; Taylor Rodgers chipped in five points and Emily Mathews scored four.
Erica Robison and Shelby Therme had four rebounds each. Therme and Karlie Wade had two assists apiece; Mathews and Logan Hartsock each had two steals.
The Wolves play at Wapello on Friday.
