Winter sports start: Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball takes the court
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball team is back on the court, and the Panthers return nearly every player from last season’s squad.
The first official day of girls’ basketbal practice was Monday, and the Panthers took the court that afternoon.
“The first few practices have gone well,” Coach Joanna Settles said. “Our focus is on communication, both on offense and defense. We’re also working on our shooting and ball handling.”
And overall, the coaches have more girls to work with.
“Our numbers are up — we have more girls in the gym,” Settles said. “And we have a couple seniors this year.”
The Panthers, who went 13-9 last year and didn’t graduate any players, will be led this season by seniors Taryne Shull and Natalie Myers.
They return other starters in Kelsi Phipps and Natalie Ita. Hannah Becker, who got the starting nod a few times, will also be back.
The Panthers will scrimmage at Cedar Rapid Kennedy on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., and will play against Louisa-Muscatine in the Iowa Wesleyan College Jamboree on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Their season officially opens on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Durant. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Panthers’ home opener is Tuesday, Nov. 26, against Muscatine, starting at 6 p.m.
