Wolves’ 4x400 win gives them edge over Danville in Bears’ home meet
DANVILLE — The New London and Winfield-Mt. Union track and field teams competed at Danville on Thursday, where the W-MU boys placed third in the team scores with 96 points, edging host Danville (94) with a win in the final event of the night, the 4x400-meter relay.
The Wolves 4x400 team crossed the line in 3:49.39, less than a second ahead of the Bears (3:49.68). The teams were tied for third going into the final event, and the win gave the Wolves two extra points and sole possession of the third spot in the team standings.
L&M won the meet with a score of 167, and Wapello was second with 116 points. New London took fifth (52), and Harmony was sixth (15).
Other first-place finishes for the Wolves came from Kyle Davis in the shot put with a throw of 41-3 1/4 and Max Fricke in the 400 with a time of 53.73 seconds. The distance medley team also won its event, finishing in 4:06.66.
For New London, the 4x800-meter relay took first in a time of 9:29.58.
Second-place finishes for the Tigers came from the shuttle hurdle relay team in a time of 1:12.16, Tony Menke in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:17.38 and Riley Grogan in the discus with a throw of 112-1.
W-MU’s Colton Hinkle threw 110-4 1/4 in the discus for third place, and teammate Davis was fourth with a throw of 110-0 1/3.
In the 1,600-meter run, Jonathan Quinn was third for W-MU in a time of 5:18.16, just ahead of teammate Gavin Benzce (5:25.76).
Benzce finished second for the Wolves in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:12.05, and Kyler Smith was second in the 200-meter dash in 25:09 seconds, ahead of New London’s Austin McBeth, who took third in 25.44.
McBeth fourth in long jump for the Tigers, with a mark of 17-8 3/4.
On the girls’ side of the meet, New London’s Dani Holt was the champion in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.70 seconds, and the Tigers claimed the title in the 4x400-meter relay as well, finishing in 4:49.26.
The Wolves also had two first-place finishes. Karlie Wade won long jump with a mark of 15-3 1/4, and teammate Raelen Gipple was fourth in the event with a jump of 14-2. The Wolves’ sprint medley team crossed the line in a time of 2:09.26 for a win.
Other top finishes for the Wolves came from Paige Breon, who took second in the 100-meter dash, and Lou Krieger-Coen, who placed third in discus (91-5 1/4) and fourth in shot put (32-6 1/2). The W-MU 4x200 team was second in a time of 1:58.69.
For New London, Brandi Allen took second in the high jump with a mark of 4-7.
The Tigers’ distance medley team was third (5:16.41), and so was their 4x100 team (58.09). New London was fourth in the sprint medley with a time of 2:14.72.
Overall, the Tigers scored 38 points for fifth place at the meet, and W-MU took fourth with 55 points.
L&M claimed the team title with 150 points, followed by Central Lee (141) and Danville (94).
Harmony was sixth (26) and IMS took seventh (21).
The Wolves will run again at Mediapolis on Tuesday, along with the New London boys, while the Tiger girls will compete at Central Lee that day. Both meets start at 5 p.m.
