Wolves lose 4-1 conference heartbreaker at Highland
RIVERSIDE — Winfield-Mt. Union lost a 4-1 Southeast Iowa Conference heartbreaker to Highland Thursday evening.
The Wolves blanked the host Huskies for five innings and nursed a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth before junior Thayne McElhinney unsuccessfully battled control problems on the mound.
McElhinney allowed just two hits to Highland hitters but six walks and some W-MU fielding mishaps proved to be his undoing. Both fueled the winners’ four-run splurge and victory.
McElhinney struck out three in going the distance. He also was the hitting ace for the Wolves, chasing home Garret Baker with a fourth-inning run with one of his two singles.
Matthew Niebuhr doubled and singled for the Wolves, and Garret Baker had a pair of singles. Others with W-MU hits were Darren Hunter and Ross Vantiger.
W-MU goes into the final week of the regular season with a 6-15 mark. Danville visits Wednesday evening and Cardinal of Eldon is in town Thursday night.
