Young aids weight-training at W-MU
WINFIELD — Last week, the Winfield-Mt. Union athletes had a chance to learn weightlifting techniques from Dave Young, a graduate assistant and strength coach at the University of Memphis.
“(Scott) McCarty wanted to continue strengthening our athletic programs,” W-MU Superintendent Pat Coen said. “We wanted to keep the excitment going, and we had 60 people show up, so it’s clearly there.”
Since so many athletes attended, they were split up into three groups to work on strength, stretching and agility.
“We’re happy with the turnout,” said McCarty, who is the head football coach and an assistant basketball coach at W-MU. “We want to teach them proper techniques and give them the tools to be successful.”
That’s where Young came in, demonstrating the correct way to do weight training.
Young is the son of Mt. Pleasant graduate Steve Young and the grandson of Kay Young, who still lives in Mt. Pleasant.
