10 Arc athletes participate in state Special Olympics this year

Aug 23, 2017

The Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties held their annual meeting June 15, at the Fairfield Public Library. There was a total of 23 present, including the officers.

There was a special guest, Taylor Peiffer, from Pekin High School. She was the recipient of the Susan Presley Scholarship who will be attending Indian Hills this fall for Early Childhood.

Phyllis Freeman gave an interesting program on how she had taken her mother and aunt with her to Camp Courageous so they could share in the experience of volunteering in such a beautiful place. Camp Courageous is a therapeutic camp in Montecello for Iowa-area people of all ages with various disabilities.

Refreshments were served thanks to the contributions from Jack and Pat Whitten, Codie Amason, Ronnie Withrow and Kathy Henry.

Kerri Erue reported 10 athletes attended the State Special Olympics May 25 and 26. They participated in the 250 bike race, softball throw, 50 meter and 100 meter.

The Tootsie Roll drive, in conjunction with Knights of Columbus, took place on Aug. 4 and 5. Thanks to all that gave up their time to sit at the table to receive donations.

A disc golf basket along with six discs were ordered for the residents at Jackson Point.

The next meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Tenco Building located at 3001 Grimes in Fairfield. All are invited.
