County engineer says new bridge nears completion

By Corey Munson | Apr 01, 2010
Workers continue construction on the Good Year Road Bridge in western Mt. Pleasant on Friday, April 2. Primary construction on the bridge is expected to wrap up in May, it should reopen in early June.

The Good Year Road Bridge, on Mt. Pleasant’s western edge, will likely open around June 1.

“They’re working on the Good Year Bridge, they poured some concrete last month and they set all of the concrete beams last month,” Henry County Engineer Bill Belzer said during a county department heads meeting with the Board of Supervisors. “They are now putting the decking down and should be pouring the concrete deck-if not by the end of next week, then the week after sometime.”

The bridge closed Oct. 26, 2009, creating an approximately four-mile detour.

If completed on schedule, the bridge will have been closed for just over seven months.

The construction portion of the project is actually scheduled to wrap up in May, but the road on either side must be repaired along with the shoulders. This will push the open date back into June.
