Local retailers give mixed review to weekend sales

By LYDIA BAKER-CRAWLEY, Mt. Pleasant News | Dec 19, 2010

Saturday Christmas sales in Mt. Pleasant were given a mixed review by local retailers.

Some retailers like Country Charm, Sound Advice and Peebles saw marked sales improvements, while other retailers such as Bezoni’s True Value and de Brito Baking Bistro saw a slump in sales.

Heidi Gallup of Peebles said her store’s sales have been good this shopping season and Saturday sales nearly matched those of the previous year.

“Saturday was fantastic,” Gallup said. “We did a little less than last year, but we did really, really well. Overall, we’ve done better this year than last year.”

Sound Advice’s success stemmed from an increase in afternoon sales. Sound Advice reported that a sales promotion also helped the company’s sales on Saturday.

Country Charm reported increased sales in poinsettias, candles and other gift items.

“We were just selling a wide variety of everything,” Marilyn Bertsch of Country Charm said.

However, the increase in sales did not affect all Mt. Pleasant businesses. Bezoni’s True Value reported that sales were slow on Saturday and de Brito Baking Bistro’s sales for Saturday were unusually slow.

“On the contrary, I did not have much business on Saturday,” Josa Moreira of de Brito Baking Bistro said.
